Our Story

Here's our story behind The Baby Elephant Adventures. We both loved the idea that visitors should get to know the real Cambodia – the people, the country, the life of everyday Khmer; in the rice fields, the salt farms, the ancient caves, the workings inside a Pagoda, the internationally acclaimed Kampot pepper.

Not just race along the dangerous and dusty roads, not understanding what people were seeing or what the true Cambodia was. It took months to plan the route, speak with the local Khmer people; and really map out an unforgettable adventure for you.

Why a Jeep? Well, it's an original from the Vietnam conflict and offers sun and rain coverage so you can travel in comfort. It's truly unique to Kampot & Kep, and with Sry's knowledge and guidance, an awesome way to spend the day getting to know, not just Kampot, but the Khmer people. With a free flow of iced cold water, soft drinks, beer, and snacks, it's an experience you won't forget!

Meet the Team

Sry

I was born in Kampong Cham Province, with 2 sisters and one brother. Then I moved to Siem Reap with my Tuk Tuk, to work with John at the hostel, taking guests to see the wonders of Angkor.

After the closedown that Covid caused, he and I moved to Kampot, a town that we have worked in before. He owned a hotel in Kep, Q Bungalows. We had fun, but Kampot was where we really wanted to be and to showcase the wonders of southern Cambodia.

So here we are! Ready and hoping you will allow us to provide you with a true experience of my Cambodia, in a unique vintage US Jeep, through Kampot and Kep! Come, share my country; let me tell my stories; hear the stories of others, learn, indulge, and feel the true wonder of Cambodia. The Kingdom of Wonder.

John

I first came to Cambodia from Australia in 1999, when UNTAC and CMAC were the force of the day. No building in Phnom Penh was more than five stories high, and every year the rains brought at least a 1 meter flood to the city!

I then started what was only the second hostel in the country at the time; based in Siem Reap.
HI Siem Reap. I met Sry there, where he was a tuk-tuk driver and guide to the wonders of Angkor for our guests. We became close friends and then brothers through Buddhist Lore at the local Siem Reap Pagoda.

Then COVID hit. We had to close the Hostels (we had two by then), and I returned to my family in Australia while the world shut down. Coming back in late 2021, we both decided to buy some land in Kampot, a place which we both loved and have lived and worked before.

We built our Khmer house which also has a small garden grill, bar, pond, and stream. From here, we run the Baby Elephant Jeep adventures. We sincerely hope you enjoy your time in Cambodia. Sry's home country and my adopted one.

Our Commitment to Community

While we know you're going to have an awesome time on our Adventure, you should also take satisfaction in that you are helping the local community at the same time. A part of the money you pay goes to buy school equipment for the kids at the local Pagoda we visit.

We use and pay for only local guides, in the caves, rice farms and pepper plantation. We also help with the children's school fees at the local family we visit. And have paid for their new bathroom, and some work on their house.

So, it's not just an Adventure you are experiencing, but an investment in the future of Cambodia you are making.
